I admit to playing the lottery a few dollars every week. I tend to play scratch tickets, and unless I win big, I tend to re-invest the money for more tickets. I've had strings of maybe 6 different scratch ticket purchases within a week, where you win a few dollars until I lose the pile. I know statistics, and I know the house always wins, but that little thrill of what if is kind of nice.

On a more altruistic side, my state (Massachusetts) uses about 1/2 of the money coming in from the lottery to plow back to the local towns where it is often used for schools and police. I figure my $6/week is ultimately helping my neighbors. I'm at a point, where I can certainly afford the $6 donation to the state.

I dunno if your husband's math is all that ... I mean, from a quantum viewpoint, the difference between 1:1,000,000,000 and 0:1,000,000,000 is pretty damn big.

My husband (the engineer and mathematician) says that one doesn't substantially increase one's odds of winning by purchasing a ticket, so you might as well just save the buck.

I regard it as thirty seconds of entertainment, from the time you get out the ticket to check the numbers, until you realize that you lost...again. I don't buy often, but I always enjoy those thirty seconds.

And I do admit that if I ever won anything substantial, I'd *really* enjoy waving it under my husband's nose. ;) Take that, math guy!

Bought two $2 scratch off tickets today. One was a bust, one netted me $5. A buck profit!

Yes, it is odd. I use it as a nickname on a few online games and forums I go to.

I usually just say it's feline for grok.

Thank you, I'll check it out.

By the way ... your name, Dian and I had a pair of kittens that used to make a sound very similar to your name whenever they wanted food. Odd coincidence, that.

Ah ... terribly sorry, but I should have been a little more specific: A sew-on embroidered patch. I did find a few iron-ons, mostly from secondary sources like this one, but - according to Dian - trying to sew an iron-on patch onto anything is a lesson in massive frustration. The needle drags through the adhesive and become coated, requiring it be replaced or cleaned every few stitches. Sorry and thanks for the link.
